As a kid there was nothing I wanted more than a colony of bees to support my vegetable garden and strawberry patch. My parents however, did not want a colony of bees in their backyard so I never got my bees but I did carry them in my heart and mind. When I had the chance to work with coffee farmers in 2019 on a participatory design and business project, I met Carlitos, a farmer who also kept bees but has some issues with his setup. It was a divine meeting that stuck with me because I finally got to harvest and process honey and fulfill a childhood dream. It filled me with joy and peace to not only help Carlitos develop a new hive design for him but to experience bees in a light. It was an experience that stuck with me and inspired this design which is also the second piece of furniture I seriously designed. I wanted to design something that captured the ephemeral aspect of cutting honeycomb from a frame, the joy of eating honeycomb fresh from the hive with new friends, and the satisfaction of fulfilling a childhood dream.
