Phobos Dining Chairs

A Memphis design inspired chair designed for Cafe Mars, a restaurant in Brooklyn, NYC. I drew inspiration from many of the simple shapes prevalent in Memphis design as well as the ingredients on the menu. I started by creating a set of parts that could be mixed and matched to create a funky and fun chair that would also be sturdy and stable for daily use. I iterated around 1100 different designs which were narrowed down to 20ish options that were then presented to the client. Out of the numerous chair design that were created one was chosen by the client and refined for comfort and increased stability. The seat features a slight v shape, while the back has a gentle slope. The seat design is one of my favorite features of this chair as it greatly increased the comfort of the seat and is a design move I plan to incorporate in future chairs.

After the initial prototype, I worked with Cafe Mars to redesign the chair to be lighter and smaller to better fit into the space, while increasing the physical accessibility of the chair for staff and patrons. The updated chair incorporates a U-shaped leg, mirroring the back in a fun and playful way. The chair is made of solid beech and painted with a custom neon pink paint that was hand-mixed for the restaurant and pairs well with the colorful and inviting atmosphere throughout the space.
