“In 2016, one-fifth of adults living in households earning less than $30,000 a year were “smartphone-only” internet users.” - This was the quote taken from Pew Foundation research about internet access in the US written out in binary code.

Smartphones and poverty are ubiquitous across the globe, nearly every person on the planet uses a smartphone and that fact is bridging communities closer together. This installation piece highlights the scales at which this quote, translated into binary and spelled out with pieces of red paper on perforated metal rafters, discusses. The greater issue, people not having reliable internet access in an increasingly technology-based society, flies right above most people’s heads a fact that is illustrated by the piece’s location above the viewers' head. The red paper used allows the piece to blend seamlessly into the rafter by creating the illusion of a wire used to transfer information.
